Begin with Naruto Shippuden episode 243 and watch through 289. Episodes 290-295 form the self-contained Power story, so a plot-focused viewer can save them for later. Resume at 296 and continue through 348. Episodes 349-361 cover Kakashi's ANBU years; watch them for character history or move to 362 when you want the battlefield to continue.

Watch 362-375, save the Mecha Naruto episodes 376-377 for later, then continue with 378-388 and 391-393. Episodes 389-390 are a Hinata and Hanabi side story. Episodes 394-413 leave the war for a second Chunin Exam story. Resume the current conflict at 414-421, save 422-423 if you want a tighter route, and watch 424-431.

Episodes 432-450 form the long Jiraiya Shinobi Handbook dream story. Episodes 451-458 adapt Itachi Shinden and can stay in broadcast order or move after the war on a momentum-first watch. The central final conflict returns at 459-468 and 470-479. Episode 469 is a standalone Kakashi-face comedy episode between those blocks.

Why there is no honest single range

The phrase Fourth Great Ninja War describes a story phase, not one tidy television arc. The anime divides the conflict into training, battlefield fronts, reanimated opponents, the Ten Tails, Obito, Madara, Kaguya, and Naruto's final confrontation with Sasuke. Long flashback and anime-original runs interrupt those phases without changing the fact that the war is still underway in the present timeline.

Crunchyroll's arc guide also notes that many commonly used Naruto arc names are unofficial. Its ranges are useful navigation labels, but an arc label does not prove that every episode inside a broad block has the same source status. This guide therefore identifies viewing blocks and interruption points instead of stamping episodes 243-479 with one canon or filler label.

What to watch before episode 243

Finish the Five Kage Summit viewing block through episode 221, then watch episode 222, The Five Kage's Decision. That episode carries a central decision about hiding Naruto and Killer Bee while the villages prepare their alliance. Skipping it because a broad list marks 222-242 as one travel block removes information that the war assumes you know.

Episodes 223-242 follow Naruto's voyage toward the island. Much of the trip is anime-original and changes the pace from political crisis to episodic travel. Completionists should watch it where it aired. A plot-focused viewer can use the Shippuden filler list, retain any transition material they want, and reach episode 243 without pretending episode 222 was disposable.

Episodes 243-275: Naruto trains while the war begins

Naruto reaches the island under the cover of a secret mission and asks Killer Bee to help him control the Nine Tails' chakra. His confrontation with his own hatred leads into a struggle with the beast inside him and a meeting with Kushina. The official Naruto retrospective places this training at the beginning of the Fourth Great Ninja War, even though Naruto is being kept away from the battlefield.

Outside the island, Kabuto joins forces with the masked man and supplies a reanimated army. The five villages form the Allied Shinobi Forces, while Gaara's speech asks people with generations of conflict behind them to fight as one force. The war begins before Naruto is told the truth. That dramatic gap explains why the island material belongs to the war phase rather than functioning as unrelated training.

Keep episodes 243-275 together on a first watch. Kushina's account of Naruto's birth, Kisame's last mission, the opening clashes, and Naruto's decision to leave the island all feed the battlefield story. Episode 275, A Message from the Heart, closes the block with Iruka's words following Naruto toward the front.

Episodes 276-289: the first battlefield fronts

Episodes 276-289 are commonly grouped under the Seven Ninja Swordsmen phase. The Allied forces face reanimated shinobi whose histories connect them to Kakashi, Gaara, Ino-Shika-Cho, and other fighters spread across the divisions. Reanimation turns old relationships into combat problems because the living have to stop people they once respected, feared, or loved.

Treat 276-289 as a broadcast block rather than proof of uniform manga sourcing. The later episodes expand individual fights beyond the central adaptation, and per-episode databases disagree about some boundaries. Watching the full block preserves each battlefield thread. Episodes 290-295: where Power fits

Power is a six-episode original story created around the anime reaching its 500th total broadcast episode across Naruto and Naruto Shippuden. It follows Team Kakashi on a separate investigation and has its own visual identity, setting, and threat. Crunchyroll lists episodes 290-295 as filler rather than part of the surrounding war arcs.

A first-time viewer chasing the war can move from 289 to 296 without losing the battlefield plot. Completionists should still watch Power; it works better as one uninterrupted mini-series than as six episodes mistaken for the next war front. Saving it for after episode 479 also avoids breaking Naruto's movement toward active combat.

Episodes 296-320: Naruto enters the battle

Episode 296 is titled Naruto Enters the Battle!, and it is the correct return point after Power. Naruto uses the sensing ability of Nine Tails Chakra Mode to identify White Zetsu infiltrators, then sends shadow clones toward several fronts. The official anniversary recap describes this section as the second day of the war and follows Naruto and Bee into the conflict.

The range moves among former Kage, reanimated jinchuriki, surviving Akatsuki plans, and several smaller encounters. Some episodes give supporting shinobi their own fights while the main strategy advances elsewhere. That structure can feel scattered because the war is deliberately happening across many divisions at once.

AnimeAnchor's local episode classifications are provisional and contain obvious contradictions in this area, including central story episodes marked as filler. Episodes 321-348: Madara, Kabuto, and the war's escalation

Episode 321, Reinforcements Arrive, begins the next major escalation. The real Madara enters the battlefield, forcing the alliance and the five Kage to confront power on a different scale from the reanimated units they have already faced. Naruto and Bee also face the masked man and the reanimated jinchuriki under his control.

A second front follows Sasuke and Itachi toward Kabuto. Their objective affects every reanimated fighter, so a seemingly personal Uchiha story becomes part of the alliance's survival. The brothers' reunion also forces Sasuke to hear answers he could not receive during their earlier fight.

Watch 321-348 in order. The block alternates between battlefields and then moves into history involving Obito, Madara, and the formation of the Akatsuki. Episode 348 does not end the war. It hands the broadcast to Kakashi's ANBU history before the current fight resumes.

Episodes 349-361: Kakashi's ANBU history

Episodes 349-361 step away from the battlefield to follow Kakashi after the deaths and failures that shaped his youth. The story covers his ANBU service and brings Yamato, Itachi, Hiruzen, Danzo, and the Nine Tails attack into the same retrospective period. Crunchyroll labels the block as filler, though it develops history connected to the present cast.

Watch it now if Kakashi and Yamato are a priority or if you prefer broadcast order. Save it until after the war if you want to preserve the urgency created at episode 348. The return point is episode 362, Kakashi's Resolve. That episode opens in the present conflict, so no recap special or movie is needed between the two ranges.

Episodes 362-375: back to the Ten Tails

The alliance confronts the Ten Tails while Naruto's connection with Kurama lets him extend protection across the battlefield. Losses inside this block test the promise that nobody else will die, and the arrival of earlier Hokage changes both the military balance and Sasuke's understanding of the village.

Team 7 returns to the same field, but reunion does not erase years of conflict. Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke announce separate ambitions while fighting beside each other. Kakashi's struggle with Obito runs in parallel and reaches a direct confrontation in episode 375, Kakashi vs. Obito.

Keep 362-375 intact. It pays off the historical material surrounding Hashirama, Madara, Kakashi, and Obito while setting up the next Ten Tails transformation. The sequence ends at a natural pause before two unrelated comedy-action episodes.

Episodes 376-377: the Mecha Naruto interruption

Episodes 376 and 377 tell the Mecha Naruto story. They sit between major war phases in broadcast order, but Crunchyroll's arc ranges leave them outside the Fourth Shinobi World War: Climax and Birth of the Ten Tails' Jinchuriki blocks. Their tone and premise make the break easy to recognize.

Save both episodes for later if you are watching the war for momentum. Watch them together if you are following every broadcast episode. Resume at 378, The Ten Tails' Jinchuriki. Do not skip 378 based on the two episodes before it; the central conflict returns immediately.

Episodes 378-393: Obito's choice and a two-episode detour

Episodes 378-388 follow Obito as the Ten Tails' jinchuriki and push the alliance to find a method that reaches both his power and the person beneath it. Naruto's answer draws on the bonds formed across the series, while the reanimated Hokage and the rest of Team 7 hold different parts of the battlefield together.

Episodes 389-390 switch to Hinata and Hanabi. They are not included in Crunchyroll's Ten Tails arc range. Completionists can watch them in place; momentum-first viewers can save them and resume at 391, Madara Uchiha Arises.

Watch 391-393 before taking another break. Madara's return to life and the extraction of the tailed beasts leave Naruto and Sasuke near death. Episode 393, A True Ending, is a cliffhanger. The anime then leaves that crisis for twenty episodes, which is the most disruptive interruption in the late war.

Episodes 394-413: the second Chunin Exams

In Naruto's Footsteps: The Friends' Paths returns to the period when Naruto trained with Jiraiya and Sasuke had already left the village. The Hidden Leaf and Hidden Sand hold another Chunin Exam, giving Sakura, Ino, Hinata, Tenten, Lee, Neji, Gaara, and others a story set before Shippuden's present.

Crunchyroll labels episodes 394-413 as filler. The block lasts twenty episodes and arrives directly after Naruto and Sasuke collapse in the war, so it can overpower the cliffhanger on a first watch. Move from 393 to 414 for the current story. Return to 394-413 later as a complete pre-war cast story rather than treating it as fragmented flashbacks.

Episodes 414-431: the war reaches Infinite Tsukuyomi

Episode 414, On the Brink of Death, returns to Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura, Gaara, Kakashi, Obito, and Madara at the moment episode 393 left them. The next episodes explain how Naruto and Sasuke survive and place the Sage of Six Paths inside the history driving the current conflict.

Episodes 422-423 form a short Konohamaru side story outside Crunchyroll's listed Ten Tails range. Save them if you want an uninterrupted path from episode 421 to 424. Episode 424, To Rise Up, returns to Naruto and Sasuke's fight against Madara.

Watch 424-431 as the plan for Infinite Tsukuyomi succeeds and the present cast is pulled into dream worlds. Episode 431 focuses on Karin's dream, but it still belongs to the initial run of individual Infinite Tsukuyomi material before the anime starts its much longer alternate Jiraiya story at 432.

Episodes 432-458: two different kinds of backstory

Episodes 432-450 adapt a story dreamed by Tsunade from Jiraiya's book. It imagines a changed version of familiar Naruto events and is listed as filler by Crunchyroll. Viewers following the battlefield should save the full nineteen-episode run and continue with episode 451.

Episodes 451-458 adapt the Itachi Shinden novels. This is source-adapted material rather than the same kind of anime-original dream story, but it still pauses the present war to recount Itachi's life. Broadcast-order viewers should keep it here. A momentum-first viewer can save the block for after episode 479 and begin the final conflict at 459.

These blocks should never be collapsed into one label. One is an alternate dream narrative created for the anime run; the other adapts published Itachi stories. Both interrupt the same battlefield cliffhanger, yet their source and purpose differ.

Episodes 459-479: the final war route

Episode 459, She of the Beginning, starts the Kaguya phase. Watch through 468 as Team 7 confronts the origin revealed behind Madara's plan. Episode 469, A Special Mission, is a standalone comedy episode about Kakashi's face and is excluded from Crunchyroll's Kaguya range.

Resume at 470 and continue without a break through 479. The Kaguya battle resolves first, then Sasuke states what he intends to do with the power left after the war. Naruto and Sasuke return to the Final Valley for the conflict the series has carried since their first fight there.

Episode 479, Naruto Uzumaki!!, handles the immediate outcome and the end of the war. Do not stop at the end of the largest attack in the prior episodes. The aftermath, the release of Infinite Tsukuyomi, and the decisions made once the fighting ends belong to the same conclusion.

Where the movies fit during the war

No theatrical Naruto story is required inside episodes 243-479. Road to Ninja and the earlier Shippuden films are side stories that interrupt the war if inserted by Japanese release date. Completionists can use the Naruto movie guide after a viewing block, but the television conflict never pauses to require one of those films.

The Last: Naruto the Movie is different because it belongs to the postwar story and explains Naruto and Hinata's relationship before the wedding episodes. Do not watch it during the war. Finish episode 479 first. The final-arc guide places it after the later novel blocks and before episodes 494-500.

A pace that keeps the fronts readable

Use the return points as natural sessions: 243-256 for training and alliance assembly, 257-275 for the first war day and Naruto's escape, 276-289 for the reanimated battlefield fronts, 296-320 for Naruto's arrival, and 321-348 for Madara plus the Uchiha and Kabuto material.

After the Kakashi break, use 362-375, 378-393, 414-431, and 459-479 as the large present-day blocks. Those ranges still contain flashbacks, but they preserve the active conflict. A war this long is easier to follow when pauses happen at documented interruptions instead of in the middle of a battle spread across several divisions.

Final recommendation

For a first plot-focused watch, keep 243-289, 296-348, 362-375, 378-388, 391-393, 414-421, 424-431, 459-468, and 470-479. Save Power, Kakashi's ANBU history, Mecha Naruto, the Hanabi story, the second Chunin Exams, Konohamaru's side story, and Jiraiya Shinobi Handbook. Decide separately whether Itachi Shinden stays in broadcast order.
