Why Alabasta starts before the desert kingdom
The name Alabasta is often used for the desert episodes alone, but the official story page uses it for the wider journey from Reverse Mountain through Robin's arrival. The grouping follows Vivi's mission. She enters the crew's path at Whiskey Peak, travels with them across the Grand Line, and leaves after they save her kingdom.
Smaller arc labels still help viewers find their place. Reverse Mountain introduces Laboon and Crocus. Whiskey Peak exposes Baroque Works. Little Garden puts the crew against Mr. 3 while introducing the giants Dorry and Brogy. Drum Island adds Chopper. The desert conflict brings those threads under Crocodile's Operation Utopia.
Calling episodes 62-130 the Alabasta saga does not erase those arcs. It describes the full campaign. A search for the Alabasta arc may mean episodes 92-130, while an official saga route begins at 62. Checking the range prevents viewers from starting after Vivi has already explained why she is traveling with pirates.
Episodes 62-63: Laboon and the entrance to the Grand Line
Episode 62 places the Going Merry inside Reverse Mountain and in the path of Laboon, a whale striking the Red Line. Crocus cares for him at the Twin Cape and explains that Laboon has waited decades for the pirate crew that left him behind. His scars come from trying to break through the wall to find them.
Luffy does not solve Laboon's grief with reassurance. He starts a fight, declares their match unfinished, and paints the Straw Hat mark on the whale. The promise gives Laboon a future opponent to await rather than a vanished crew to mourn. That agreement will remain relevant far beyond Alabasta.

The tomb does not give Crocodile the answer he demands. Robin withholds what she reads, and their alliance ends when he attacks her. Her own goal is the history carried by the Poneglyphs, not the weapon he wants to control.
Luffy saves Robin even after she tells him she has no reason to live. That exchange prepares her later request to join the crew. Alabasta introduces the ancient weapons and Robin's historical search without explaining the entire world mystery at once. The unanswered parts travel with her.
Episode 129 and the X-mark farewell
Vivi chooses to remain in Alabasta rather than sail with the Straw Hats. Her country needs her after the civil war, and leaving would turn the crew's victory into another absence from the people she wanted to protect. The decision does not cancel the time she spent as one of them.
The Marines are listening when Vivi speaks to the departing ship, so the Straw Hats cannot answer aloud without confirming their connection to a princess. They raise the arms marked with an X, the sign created to defeat Bon Clay's impersonation. A defensive code becomes their silent farewell.
Bon Clay also protects the crew's escape by using his copied appearance and ship to misdirect Hina's forces. His choice does not erase his work for Baroque Works, but it turns an earlier joke and enemy power into the reason the Straw Hats can leave Vivi's coast.
Episode 130 and Nico Robin joining the crew

The official story index treats 62-130 as one Alabasta run, but the anime expands the manga route in places. Episodes 68-69 adapt Coby and Helmeppo's cover story rather than following the Straw Hats. Several desert episodes add travel encounters and Ace material beyond the central manga scenes.
Classification lists disagree over mixed and expanded episodes, so a single canon label can hide what is actually on screen. None of these additions changes the official episode numbering. A viewer can keep the complete broadcast route without worrying that a movie or special has been inserted into the count.
For a first watch, the full range is the better route. The short detours establish crew behavior, Alabasta's geography, and Ace's time with Luffy. Returning viewers can use episode checkpoints, but they should preserve Vivi's introduction, Drum Island, the three Crocodile fights, and episodes 127-130.
The Alabasta recap movie is not the TV saga
One Piece later retold the desert conflict in the theatrical film The Desert Princess and the Pirates: Adventures in Alabasta. The movie compresses material from the television story and changes the time available for travel, supporting fights, and political setup.
It should not replace episodes 62-130 for a first watch. Reverse Mountain, Little Garden, and Drum Island explain how Vivi reaches her country with this crew, and the TV version gives the civil war room to develop across many viewpoints. A recap cannot carry every one of those steps.
Treat the film as an alternate retelling after finishing the saga. It is not an episode, and it does not create a second place in the TV numbering. The original series route remains episode 62 through episode 130.
A focused Alabasta rewatch
Start with episodes 62-67 for Laboon, Whiskey Peak, and Vivi's identity. Continue with 70-77 for Little Garden, then 78-91 for Drum Island and Chopper. Episode 92 introduces Bon Clay before the crew reaches Alabasta in episode 93.

Finish with episodes 127-130. Those four episodes cover the aftermath, escape, Vivi's farewell, and Robin's arrival. Stopping after Crocodile falls would miss both choices that define the crew leaving Alabasta.

Episodes 131-135 tell anime-original stories focused on individual Straw Hats. Episodes 136-138 follow Zenny and the Island of Goats, while episodes 139-143 cover the Rainbow Mist. These stories sit between Alabasta and the next official saga range.
The Sky Island story begins at episode 144 with the falling ship, Masira, and a Log Pose pointing upward. Episodes 144-152 take place around Jaya before episode 153 reaches the White Sea. That route introduces Bellamy, Mont Blanc Cricket, Blackbeard, and the method used to launch the Going Merry into the sky.
Watch the post-Alabasta episodes if you want the broadcast sequence or more time with the crew after Robin joins. Move to episode 144 if you want the next main story. Either route should begin Skypiea from Jaya rather than jumping directly to the cloud islands.
